Commentary

The Gunslinger, written over the space of twelve years, is perhaps King's finest, most poetic tale. No other character in all of his work is as well-crafted or mesmerising as Roland of Gilead. We not only learn of his heartache, and motivation, and humanity, but we live them through clear, descriptive writing (despite the abundance of adverbs).

Many people struggle through the beginning. I urge you to push on. The reward will come. The gun battle in the town of Tull is furious, written with a precision for detail achieved by few writers. Roland's battle with his teacher Cort, for the right to be a Gunslinger, is easily the most triumphant scene of King's I have ever read.

By the time you reach the end you will be eager for the next three books, and urging King to write the fifth, sixth, and seventh installements, as he has promised. You will wonder how you have gone without Roland of Gilead for so long, and the Dark Tower will be part of you.
